Grout repair in Las Vegas bathrooms and kitchens

Grout repair in Las Vegas usually begins with a joint that has given up: a gap where the tub meets the wall, grout washing out of a shower floor, or a dark line that no cleaner will lift. These small openings are how water gets behind tile, and catching them early can save a tear-out later.

Grout and caulk do different jobs. Grout fills the rigid joints between tiles. Caulk belongs wherever two planes meet or two materials can move against each other: inside corners, the tub line, around the shower pan and along the countertop. Grout packed into a moving joint cracks, which is why so many corner cracks keep coming back.

How a recaulk and regrout are done

Old caulk has to come out down to bare tile and tub. A new bead laid over a failed one seals mildew and moisture in, so the joint is stripped, wiped with alcohol to remove soap film and silicone residue, and left to dry before new sealant goes in and is tooled to a smooth concave line. Blue tape along both edges keeps a wide joint straight.

Regrouting means cutting old grout out to a consistent depth with a grout saw or an oscillating tool, then packing new grout in tight and shaping the lines. Sanded grout suits wider joints, unsanded suits tight ones, and in a shower, epoxy or urethane grout skips the sealing step altogether.

Plan on the shower staying dry while things cure. Silicone usually needs about a day before water, and cement grout needs a few days before sealing; the product label sets the exact times. We tell you before we start how long the shower or tub will be out of use.

Hard water, scale and the cleaners that ruin grout

Las Vegas water is rated very hard by the water district, and showers show it first. White scale builds up on grout lines and glass wherever water is left to dry. The water district's own advice is to wipe surfaces dry, and a squeegee after each shower does exactly that for tile walls.

Scale removers built on strong acid make the problem worse over time. They eat the cement binder in grout along with the minerals, which leaves joints sandy and sunken, and they dull polished marble or travertine on contact. A pH-neutral tile cleaner, a nylon brush and resealing the grout on a schedule keep the lines intact.

Outside caulk, heat and when tile needs more than grout

Exterior caulk around windows, door frames and where stucco meets trim lives a harder life. The National Weather Service puts the average first 110°F day in Las Vegas at June 30, and dark trim and west walls run hotter still. Basic acrylic caulk shrinks and splits under that heat, so we use an elastomeric or hybrid sealant made for exterior movement, in a paintable version where trim gets painted.

Sometimes grout is only the symptom. Tiles that sound hollow when tapped, grout that cracks again within months, or a soft spot in a shower floor often mean water has reached the backer board or the tile has lost its bond. At that point regrouting is a stopgap, and the honest fix is a partial or full shower remodel with proper waterproofing, which we can scope with you.

  • If the grout is sound and only stained or uneven, a grout colorant (a coating made for grout lines) can change or refresh the color and seals the surface at the same time. It needs clean, dry grout and a steady hand. Cracked or crumbling grout has to be replaced first, since colorant will not hold it together.

  • It depends on the sealer and how hard the shower is used, so follow the label. A simple test is to drip water on the grout: if it darkens and soaks in within a few minutes, it is time to reseal. Sealer helps grout shrug off soap and scale; it does not make a shower waterproof.

  • Tubs flex slightly when they fill, and a joint caulked while the tub was empty gets stretched every bath. Filling the tub with water before caulking, and leaving it full while the sealant sets, puts the joint at its widest so the bead is not pulled apart later. Acrylic and fiberglass tubs move more than cast iron.

  • A cracked tile can usually be cut out and replaced on its own if you have spares or we can find a close match. Doing it during a regrout makes the patch blend, since all the lines are new together. Bigger tile work, like a new backsplash or floor, falls under our tile installation service.
