Scoping your bathroom remodel in Las Vegas

Most people who call about a bathroom remodel in Las Vegas already know what bothers them: a tub nobody uses, a vanity with swollen doors, a shower that never looks clean. We start there. The first visit is about measuring the room, checking what is behind the fixtures where we can see it, and agreeing on which parts stay and which go.

A remodel tends to fall into one of three sizes. A refresh keeps the layout and swaps the vanity, mirror, lights, toilet and paint. A mid-size job adds new tile and a rebuilt shower or tub surround. A full remodel opens the walls, and that is when plumbing changes, a larger shower or a second sink become possible.

Slab floors and moving the drain

If your house sits on a concrete slab, every drain under the bathroom floor is cast into or below that concrete. Moving a toilet an inch or two is usually workable with an offset flange. Moving a shower drain across the room means saw-cutting the slab, trenching, re-sloping the pipe and patching the concrete before any tile goes down.

Relocating a drain or supply line is permit-level plumbing work, permitted and inspected as Clark County or your city requires. Homes inside the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas go through their own city building office, so your address decides who signs off. When a job crosses that line, the permit and inspections are built into the schedule from the start.

Picking finishes that live with 17-grain water

The Las Vegas Valley Water District rates its water at 291 parts per million, or 17 grains per gallon, which it classes as very hard. In a bathroom that shows up as chalky rings on chrome, white film on dark tile and spotted glass. The district's own advice is simple: wipe surfaces dry, because the spots are minerals left behind when water evaporates.

So we steer choices toward surfaces that forgive. Matte or brushed fixture finishes hide spots better than polished ones. Mid-tone tile and grout show less residue than black or bright white. A porcelain vanity top tolerates the scale cleaners that would dull polished marble. None of this is a rule, just what is easier to keep looking new.

Air, light and the order of work

Bathrooms here still need a real exhaust fan. Dry air outside does not help a closed room full of shower steam, and a fan that vents into the attic just moves moisture into a space that already runs very hot in summer. If the old fan is weak or loud, the remodel is the easy moment to replace it and run the duct to the outside.

Work moves from the inside of the walls outward. Demolition comes first, then rough plumbing and wiring, then backer board and a waterproof layer, then tile. The vanity, toilet, mirror and lights go in after the grout cures, and the shower glass is measured from the finished tile. Any new outlet or light circuit is roughed in while the walls are open, which is also a good time to deal with other lighting or electrical repairs in the house.

  • It depends on who lives in the house and who might buy it. Many owners swap the primary bath tub for a walk-in shower and keep a tub in a secondary bathroom for kids or guests. If there is only one tub in the home, think about resale before removing it.

  • The vanity, its top and faucet, the toilet, shower valve and trim, tile and grout color, and the light fixtures. The valve matters most, because it is set inside the wall early and the trim you see later must come from the same maker. Having everything on site before demolition keeps the room from sitting open while a part is on order.

  • They can, but only where there is something solid behind the tile. During a remodel we add wood blocking in the stud bays around the shower and toilet, so a bar can be screwed in whenever you need it without hunting for studs or using hollow-wall anchors. Blocking is a few pieces of lumber while the walls are open, and a tile repair if you skip it.

  • Usually, yes. Old floor tile rarely lines up with a new vanity footprint or a new shower curb, and the toilet has to come up anyway. We set the new floor tile before the vanity goes in, so the floor runs under it cleanly. If you would rather keep the floor, we first check whether the old tile can be patched where the old fixtures stood.
