Light fixture installation in Las Vegas, step by step

Light fixture installation in Las Vegas often starts with a builder-basic dome or a dated brass bar that the owner has looked at for years. The swap itself follows a fixed order: power off at the breaker, confirm with a tester, take down the old fixture, and inspect what is in the ceiling before anything new goes up.

That inspection catches most problems. We look for a box that is loose or too shallow, brittle insulation on old wire ends, a missing ground, and wire nuts that were never twisted tight. Each is fixed before the new fixture's mounting strap goes on, because a pretty light on a bad connection is still a bad connection.

Pendants, chandeliers and vanity lights

Over a kitchen island, pendants usually hang so the bottom sits around 30 to 36 inches above the counter, and spacing depends on how many you use and how long the island is. We cut the cord or chain to length on site, which is easier with you standing there to judge it by eye.

A single box over an island can feed a linear fixture or a multi-port canopy that drops three pendants. Separate boxes for each pendant mean new wiring through the ceiling. Heavy chandeliers need a box rated for their weight, and two-story entries call for a tall ladder or scaffold set on the floor, never a ladder leaning on a railing.

In bathrooms, the vanity box is often off center from the sink or the mirror. A wide backplate can hide the offset. Moving the box itself means altering wiring, which falls under permit rules.

Recessed lights, attics and permits

Slim LED wafer lights are the usual choice now for adding recessed lighting. They need only a round hole and a small junction box that sits beside the fixture, which makes them easier to fit between joists. If the ceiling has attic insulation above it, the fixture must carry an IC rating for direct contact with insulation.

Adding lights where none existed means running new wire, and the City of Las Vegas homeowner guide lists that as permit work. Clark County handles permits for unincorporated areas, and other cities in the valley set their own rules, so that work is permitted and inspected as the office for your address requires.

Recessed layouts work best planned on paper first. A common starting point is spacing lights about half the ceiling height apart, then adjusting around fans, cabinets and the joist layout we find.

Porch, garage and patio lights

Outside, the fixture has to suit the spot: damp-rated under a covered porch, wet-rated where rain hits it directly. On stucco, the fixture needs a flat mounting surface, often a mounting block, so the canopy seals instead of rocking on the texture. We caulk the top and sides and leave the bottom open so any water that gets in can drain.

Sun is hard on cheap finishes and plastic lenses, especially on west walls. Powder-coated metal or cast aluminum holds color better than painted steel. In HOA neighborhoods, a fixture that changes the look of the front elevation may need design review, so check your guidelines before ordering.

  • Yes, and it helps to open the box when it arrives and check the parts list, since missing screws or a cracked glass shade are easier to replace before the install day. Note the fixture weight too, so we know whether the existing box can carry it.

  • Most older dimmers were made for incandescent bulbs and do not handle the low load of LEDs well. The fix is a dimmer listed as compatible with the fixture, often with a trim setting for the low end. Replacing a dimmer on an existing box is a small add-on to the visit.

  • Usually, if a nearby circuit has capacity and there is a path for the wire. A closet light must keep clearance from shelves and stored items, so we pick a fixture type that suits the space. Because this is new wiring, it follows the permit rules for your address.

  • Yes, and grouping it helps. If walls or ceilings are already open for a kitchen or bath project, running wire for new lights is simpler than cutting in later. A fan and a few light swaps in the same house also make sense as one visit.
