When a shower remodel in Las Vegas makes sense

Some showers only need fresh caulk and grout. When a Las Vegas shower remodel is the right call, the signs are usually clear: grout that cracks again soon after it is redone, tile that sounds hollow when tapped, soft drywall on the far side of the wall, or a stain on the ceiling below an upstairs shower. Those point to water getting past the tile, and no surface fix stops that.

The other reason is layout. Swapping a rarely used tub for a walk-in shower, widening a cramped stall, or lowering a tall curb for easier entry all start the same way: everything comes out down to the studs and the slab, and the shower is rebuilt from the drain up.

What keeps water inside the shower

Grout and tile shed most water, but some always soaks through. The real barrier is a continuous waterproof layer, either a bonded sheet membrane or a liquid membrane rolled on in coats, over backer board on the walls and sloped toward the drain on the floor. It has to wrap the curb, the niche and every inside corner without a break.

Before any tile goes down, we plug the drain, fill the pan with water and leave it, then check that the level has not dropped. A leak found at this stage means a quick patch. Found after the tile is set, it means starting over.

Large tile, slab floors and the drain

Large-format tile on shower walls means fewer grout lines to scrub, which is a real advantage with Las Vegas water. On the floor it needs care. Big tiles cannot bend to follow a four-way slope into a center drain, so they pair best with a linear drain along one wall, which lets the floor pitch in one direction.

Moving the drain to the wall, or from a tub position to a new shower position, happens in the concrete on a ground floor. The slab is cut, the pipe is rerouted with the right fall, and the trench is filled before the pan is built. Relocating plumbing is permit-level work, so it is permitted and inspected as the county or your city requires.

Glass, valves and keeping it clear

A single fixed glass panel has fewer edges and hinges for scale to collect on than a framed door. The panel is ordered after the tile is done, set in a channel or clamps, and sealed to the tile with clear silicone. Water spots dry into scale fast in this climate, so a squeegee kept in the shower does more than any cleaner.

Inside the wall, the old valve is usually replaced rather than reused. A pressure-balance or thermostatic valve holds the temperature steady when another fixture runs, and mineral-heavy water is hard on old cartridges anyway. If the rest of the bathroom is dated too, the shower can become part of a larger bathroom remodel.

  • Yes, but on a slab it takes planning. A curbless entry means the shower floor has to sit lower than the bathroom floor, so the slab is recessed or the rest of the room is built up to meet it. It works best when the whole bathroom is being redone.

  • A niche keeps bottles off the floor and out of a hanging caddy that rusts. Place it on a wall that does not take direct spray, and size it to the tile so the cuts land cleanly. Avoid exterior walls, where it would displace insulation, and expect it to get the same waterproofing as the walls around it.

  • It cuts down the scale that builds on glass, grout and fixtures. The Southern Nevada Water Authority points out that softening is about comfort and easier cleaning, not health, and that softened water adds sodium. In the City of Las Vegas, a softener and its piping need their own permit, so plan it as a separate job from the shower.

  • Sometimes. If the tub is sound, level and not chipped, the surround can be stripped and rebuilt with new backer board and waterproofing lapped over the tub flange. The weak point is the joint where tile meets tub, which gets flexible silicone, never grout.
