Tile installation in Las Vegas: flat first, then straight

With tile installation in Las Vegas, the floor under the tile decides how the finished job looks. ANSI installation standards allow a variation of 1/4 inch over 10 feet for tile with all edges under 15 inches, but only 1/8 inch once any edge reaches 15 inches. Miss that with a big tile and one edge sits above its neighbor, a small step called lippage that catches light, dirt and toes.

Before layout, high spots on the slab are ground and low ones filled, and lines are snapped from the center of the room so the cut pieces at opposite walls come out equal. Leveling clips hold neighboring edges flush while the thinset cures, and each large tile is back-buttered so no hollow pockets are left under it.

Slab cracks and movement joints

Concrete slabs shrink as they cure and keep moving slightly with temperature, so fine cracks are normal. A tile bonded right on top of one is likely to split along it, because rigid tile cannot stretch. Over a known crack, an uncoupling or crack isolation membrane goes down first, letting the slab shift beneath without tearing the tile.

Tile also needs room to move as a whole. The Tile Council of North America's movement joint guideline calls for soft joints at the edges and across the field, every 20 to 25 feet indoors and every 8 to 12 feet where tile gets direct sunlight. In a room with a big sliding door facing the Las Vegas afternoon, that sunny strip is where the tighter spacing applies. The joints are filled with color-matched sealant instead of grout.

Backsplashes and walls

A backsplash looks simple, but the details show. The first row is set on spacers so the lines stay level even if the counter is not, and the outlet boxes get extension rings so the devices stay properly mounted behind the new face. Where tile stops in the open, the edge needs a planned finish, such as a metal profile, rather than a raw cut.

Wall tile in a laundry room or behind a bar sink can go on sound drywall. Inside a shower it cannot: wet walls need backer board and a waterproof membrane, and that work is handled as a shower remodel, where the pan, valve and glass are rebuilt together.

Grout choices for very hard water

Las Vegas tap water leaves a mineral film wherever it dries, and porous cement grout soaks it up. That grout should be sealed once it cures and resealed from time to time, while epoxy and urethane grouts resist stains without sealer and suit wet areas, though they are slower to work. A grout shade close to the tile hides a gray haze better than strong contrast.

Not every tile job means new tile. A few broken pieces in a sound floor can be cut out one by one, and leftover tile stashed in the garage by a builder or past owner is worth hunting for before shopping. Grout that crumbles around solid tile calls for regrouting, which falls under caulking and grout repair.

  • Often larger than people expect. Fewer grout lines make a small floor look calmer, and 12 by 24 inch tile works in many bathrooms and laundry rooms. The limits are the cuts around a toilet or floor drain and the extra flatness longer tiles need.

  • Usually because the edge was grouted solid where it should have been a soft joint. When the floor expands, a hard joint against the wall has nowhere to go, so it breaks. Cutting that grout out and filling the gap with flexible sealant is often the whole fix.

  • The thinset and grout bags set that, and the times vary by product and by how warm the house is. Careful foot traffic comes first, furniture later, and a refrigerator or piano last. We leave you the waiting periods for the exact products used.

  • Yes, over a noncombustible backing and with setting materials suited to the heat. Gas fireplace makers list clearances around the opening, and the tile and any trim must respect them. Have the model number handy, since the manual sets those limits.
