Doggie door installation in Las Vegas: picking the spot

Good doggie door installation in Las Vegas begins in the backyard, not at the door. Think about where your dog will land when it steps out: shade or full sun, artificial turf or gravel, a path to the side yard or a dead end against the block wall. The best opening is the one your dog will actually use in July.

Most homes give three choices. A pet door cut into an existing back door is the simplest. A wall install keeps the doors untouched and lets you place the opening anywhere framing allows. A panel insert for a sliding glass door sits in the track and needs no cutting, which suits renters.

Doors we will and will not cut

Solid wood, fiberglass and steel doors take a pet door well with the right frame kit; hollow-core doors need the cut edges blocked so the frame has something to grip. Glass is different. Tempered glass cannot be cut once made, so a pet door in the glass means ordering a new pane built with the opening.

We do not cut into the door between an attached garage and the house. The International Residential Code requires that door to be solid wood or steel at least 1 3/8 inches thick, or 20-minute fire rated, and a hole in it defeats that purpose.

If the door or wall you have in mind opens onto a pool area, tell us first. In houses where the back wall forms part of the pool barrier, a new opening can affect that barrier, since a toddler can crawl through many dog flaps.

Wall installs through stucco and block

On a framed wall with stucco outside and drywall inside, we first scan for wiring, plumbing and studs, then mark the opening from inside and drill pilot holes through to line up the exterior cut. A tunnel kit bridges the wall cavity, and the opening gets framed so the flap has solid edges on both faces.

Stucco cracks if it is cut carelessly, so we score it and use a masonry blade rather than forcing a jigsaw through. Every exterior edge is sealed so rain from summer storms cannot run behind the frame. The City of Las Vegas homeowner guide treats opening up an exterior wall as a sign a permit is needed, and HOAs often review visible exterior changes, so we check both before cutting.

A block wall is a bigger job. Cutting concrete masonry takes a saw, and the tunnel has to suit the wall thickness, so we confirm the pet door maker's wall range before you order.

Heat, dust and desert visitors

Every opening leaks some air. Double or triple flaps with magnetic edges and brush weatherstrip cut the loss, and an insulated flap makes a difference on a wall that takes afternoon sun. A shaded spot under the patio cover helps more than any flap rating.

Wildlife matters too. The Nevada Department of Wildlife has warned valley residents that coyotes come into neighborhoods near open desert and golf courses, drawn by water and prey. A locking cover for nights, or a microchip door that opens only for your pet, keeps the opening from becoming an invitation.

Measure your biggest dog from floor to shoulder and add a little for the flap. Then look at the sill height, because a tall step is hard on senior dogs and small breeds.

  • Typical PrimeFix prices in Las Vegas: Pet door in a door, $139 to $719. Pet door in glass or a slider, $319 to $1,190. Pet door in a wall, $179 to $1,790. • Usually. Send the brand and model first so we can check the cutout size and, for a wall install, whether the included tunnel fits your wall depth. Some extension tunnels are sold separately.

  • In a door, replacing the slab usually looks better than filling the cutout. In a wall, we pull the tunnel, close the framing, and patch drywall inside and stucco outside, then paint can blend the repair.

  • Some, if the flap does not close fully. Magnetic closures, brush seals along the frame, and a flap that hangs straight make the biggest difference. Flaps are a wear part; swap them once they turn stiff or warped, which happens sooner on a door in direct sun.

  • Get the landlord's approval in writing first. A sliding door panel is the usual rental choice because it lifts out when you leave and leaves no cut in the door or wall.
