What decides a flooring installation in Las Vegas

Flooring installation in Las Vegas is mostly about what sits under the new floor. On a ground floor that is usually a concrete slab; upstairs it is a wood subfloor. Every plank product states how flat and how dry the base must be. Meeting those numbers is where the real work goes; clicking planks together is the quick part.

We check flatness with a long straightedge and mark every high spot and dip. Humps are ground down, low areas take a cement-based patch, and ridges of old adhesive or thinset come off. Skip that step and the planks bridge the low spots, bounce underfoot, and wear at the locking edges until gaps appear.

Tearing out tile, carpet and old vinyl

Old ceramic tile is the hardest floor to remove. It is chipped off the slab with a rotary hammer, and the thinset left behind is ground down so the new floor starts flat. Carpet is lighter work, though the nailed tack strip around the room can break small chips off the slab edge. In older homes, vinyl tile, the backing of sheet vinyl and the adhesive under them can contain asbestos, so they are tested before anyone scrapes or sands.

Heat, sun and floating floors

Vinyl plank and laminate float: the boards lock to each other, not to the slab, and they grow and shrink with temperature. Every product calls for a gap at the walls, hidden by the baseboard, and heavy islands or cabinets should not pin the floor down. In a Las Vegas house the trouble spot is usually a sliding door or tall west window where strong sun bakes the same strip of floor every afternoon.

Some vinyl plank lines publish limits for direct sun and for indoor temperatures in a closed-up house. We read the installation sheet for the exact product you picked, and in a room with hard afternoon sun we may suggest blinds, window film or a product rated for it. Mention it before you buy if the house sits with the AC off for long stretches.

Doors, trim and transitions

New flooring changes floor height, so interior doors may need a trim at the bottom to swing freely, and a dishwasher has to be able to slide out over the new surface. Where the floor meets tile, carpet or a slider track, a transition strip covers the gap and eases the step. Baseboards are reused when they come off cleanly and replaced when they do not, with quarter round only where a baseboard has to stay.

Plan the order with any other projects. When new cabinets, a vanity or a shower are on the list, the floating floor usually goes in after them and runs up to their bases, and walls are painted first so any drips land on the old floor.

  • Vinyl plank handles water from bowls and accidents, so it is the safer pick for kitchens, laundry rooms and pet areas. Good laminate often resists claw scratches better, but water left sitting on the seams is its weak point. Compare the wear layer on vinyl and the abrasion class on laminate before you choose.

  • That depends on the product, so the installation sheet decides. Many brands want boxes to rest flat in the rooms where they will go, at normal living temperature, for a set period, while some rigid-core vinyl lines skip that step. Cartons stored in a hot garage should come indoors well before the work.

  • Often, within limits. Floating floors have a maximum run set by the maker, and past that length, or through narrow doorways, a break with a T-molding is required. Products rated for long spans reduce the number of breaks, and a molding matched to the plank color is easy to miss once furniture is in.

  • Yes, though each step is its own small job. Treads and risers are cut to fit, glued down rather than floated, and finished with a matching stair nose so the front edge is solid. If the stairs are carpeted and the floor below is changing, decide early whether they change as well.
