Four lakes in the northwest valley

Desert Shores is a lake community in the northwest part of the valley, built around Lake Jacqueline, Lake Sarah, Lake Maddison and Lake Lindsey. A handyman in Desert Shores works on homes that have been around since the late 1980s, and PrimeFix covers the whole community, any hour of the day.

The community's covenants were recorded on June 1, 1988, and the Desert Shores Community Association governs it from its office on Regatta Drive. It sits inside the City of Las Vegas in ZIP 89128. Residents can fish the lakes on a catch-and-release basis and paddle or use electric boats, but gas motors are not allowed.

Older homes, water on all sides

The oldest homes here are now more than 35 years old. At that age, the parts that touch water fail first: supply lines, angle stops, toilet flappers and the caulk around tubs and sinks. Plumbing repair and caulking and grout work cover most of it, and replacing a corroded shut-off before it fails beats drying out a wall.

Patio doors get heavy use in a community built around water and outdoor space. Sliders that drag, worn weatherstripping and sun-faded trim call for door repair and exterior painting. Monsoon season runs from June 15 to September 30, and wind-driven rain finds any gap at a door threshold.

Design review and city permits

Desert Shores has a formal design review process, with forms posted by the association. Anything that changes the outside of your home, such as a paint color or a new entry door, likely needs that review first.

The association also posts the City of Las Vegas homeowner guide on when a permit is needed, which fits because Desert Shores is inside city limits. City Building & Safety issues those permits. Swapping a faucet like for like is routine maintenance; moving plumbing or adding circuits usually needs a permit. If you are not sure which side of that line your job falls on, we check before booking it.

Desert Shores questions.

  • Yes, on the water and on interior streets alike. Anything at the lake edge itself is a question for the association, so our work stays on the house.

  • Hairline cracks at door corners and ceiling joints in an older house usually come from normal movement and temperature swings. We open them up, tape, match the texture and repaint. A crack that keeps growing or shows up with a sticking door deserves a closer look first.

  • City Building & Safety, because Desert Shores is inside Las Vegas city limits. The association's office on Regatta Drive is in the city, as is the community around it.

  • Yes, and a pet door insert in a slider avoids cutting into the house, while one in a wall or door needs a sealed frame. Either way, check design review first if it changes how the outside looks.
