From farm to golf course to regional park

Long before the houses, the land here was farmed, and in 1962 it became the Craig Ranch Golf Course. The City of North Las Vegas bought the course in 2005, built the 170-acre Craig Ranch Regional Park between 2009 and 2013, and added an amphitheater that seats more than 8,000 people in 2015. When people ask for a handyman in Craig Ranch, they usually mean the homes that have grown up around the park.

The park has three dog park areas, a 65,000-square-foot skate park and a community garden with 62 plots. The park's address is on West Craig Road, and Interstate 15 is close by.

Two generations of homes around the park

The older layer includes late-1990s housing such as the Village at Craig Ranch, built between 1995 and 1999 with a mix of attached homes and single-family houses from about 1,100 to 2,200 square feet. Those homes are now close to 30 years old. Expect worn tub caulk, tired faucets, sliding doors that drag and drywall marked by years of nail holes and anchors.

The newer layer is Century Communities' gated Craig Ranch, which held its grand opening in January 2020 directly next to the park. It has seven parks of its own, including a 3.5-acre community park, more than five miles of walking trails, and single- and two-story plans of up to 2,638 square feet.

Finishing work for the newest houses

A house finished in the 2020s rarely needs rescuing, but it often arrives bare. Typical first projects are a TV on the family room wall with no cords showing, a fan in the primary bedroom and a pendant or two over the kitchen island. Custom closets replace the single rod and shelf a builder leaves behind with storage planned around what you own.

With three dog park areas next door, a doggie door is a natural upgrade here. The simplest version is a panel that fits into a sliding door track and comes out when you move. A unit cut through a wall or an exterior door is permanent and visible from outside, so read your association's rules before picking one.

Craig Ranch questions.

  • It is in the City of North Las Vegas, and the newer gated neighborhood uses ZIP 89031. Permits for things like new circuits, panel changes or a water heater come from the city's Building Safety Division on Las Vegas Boulevard North.

  • On a standard interior wall, we run a power kit and the low-voltage cables inside the wall cavity to a recessed plate below the screen. Plain extension cords should never be fished through a wall. If the wall has fire blocking or is an exterior wall, we check first and may suggest a paintable raceway instead.

  • Usually the soft materials: caulk around tubs and sinks, weatherstripping on doors and the rubber washers in faucets. Las Vegas humidity can drop below 10 percent, and that dry air hardens caulk and seals faster than people expect. Replacing them is simple work and keeps small leaks from reaching cabinets and drywall.
